One source of unhappiness is, unsurprisingly, boredom. Sitting in traffic, for instance, is one of those things that most people would rather forego. Other tasks like laundry and cleaning the house can cause boredom and be a source of anxiety.
If you’re still not into it after 10 or 15 minutes, try something else. Many activities, especially complex and productive activities, take a certain amount of effort and focus for them to be engaging. Without help and support from others who are knowledgeable with addiction, the likelihood of sobriety happening is almost nil. Once sobriety is implemented and recovery becomes a reality, this is truly a miracle to get out from under.
I’m just sober because it’s more fun. I work hard all day, so it’s nice to come home and have the ability to relax without relying on substances. I like to de-stress on weekends so hangovers don’t serve me. I got tired of the anxiety and regrets. I don’t do clubs anymore, but dinner parties with good conversation are my best. It’s important to have the right mindset about sobriety. My social circle changed when I got sober because I realized that many of my relationships were based on getting drunk together, and that was it. I have gone to bars with people I genuinely like as a sober person, and I don’t stay for longer than an hour or two if nothing is happening. When drinking because of boredom you remove alcohol from your life, you free up all the time you spent drinking and recovering from drinking. If you ever sit down to do that math, you will shock yourself with how much time went towards drinking. Alcohol robs you of the ability to feel naturally motivated and inspired. Those feelings don’t come back immediately when you quit.
Before sobriety, I missed all the good stuff. You know all that stuff that happens right in front of your face while your head is in the clouds? When I quit drinking, I also quit sitting on the sidelines. I first noticed this shift on a walk with my daughters.
